Meet the String Bike - No Chains Attached

Cycling technology has been a constantly evolving thing since the bicycle was invented well over 100 years ago. Last weekend, I discussed , a company that is creating bike frames made of bamboo, which I thought was pretty out there. However, I just discovered something even more wild: bikes with string instead of chains.

The String Bike, as its being called, totally rethinks the traditional drivetrain of a bicycle. According to String Bike creators, the placement of the chain and gears on one side of the frame on a traditional bike causes a subtle, although not unnoticeable, asymmetrical pedaling experience. The String Bike virtually eliminates these subtle toque differences by creating a totally symmetrical drivetrain. Its essentially like having two chains on each side, both connected to the rear hub -- only its high-strength cord, not chain. Better yet, theres no grease.

The String Bike supposedly has a much smoother transition between gears, courtesy of unique, linear shifting mechanisms. Of course, the design also eliminates the need for those jagged metal chainrings. Anyone whos ever gotten an ankle or shin snagged on that nasty front cog will appreciate that. I know Ive done it once or twice over the years.

Check out this video of the in action, and see how it works for yourself. What do you think? Is string power the next big thing?
